Rexam - LEED
Chicago, IL | 23,000 square feet

Rexam, an international container manufacturer, had recently identified sustainability as a high priority throughout all of its manufacturing processes and facilities. So naturally, when they engaged Whitney to design their U.S. headquarters, this progressive company was very interested in pursuing LEED Certification for their new space. Ultimately, through environmentally conscientious design, the project was able to achieve LEED certification from the USGBC.

In addition to sustainability, the space needed to effectively convey the company’s brand, image, and history, while creating a contemporary, “European” aesthetic in keeping with the organization’s United Kingdom and Brazilian headquarters. An open, airy concept and space plan help foster open communication and teaming. Clean lines and a cool color palette complete the design theme.

Light was a critical design element effectively integrated throughout the space from daylight harvesting to unique architectural and millwork features. Incorporating the latest LED fixtures helped keep energy consumption down without sacrificing quality of light or the budget.

The heart of the project was in reconnecting the experience of arrival at the office with the authenticity, comfort, and inspiration of the travel experiences A&K offers.  Layers of material and light in the reception area carefully displayed ancient artifacts in a tastefully understated manor, complimenting the corporate brand.
